Good Friday

The Peace of the Lord IS with you!

GOOD FRIDAY is the day of Holy Week when we commemorate the crucifixion, death and burial of Jesus. Why “Good”? It was the saving and triumphant cross through which Christ redeemed the world, showing us that not even sin or death would stop the Lord from loving us and loving us into new life.

Perhaps more than ever in our current circumstances, we can understand that suffering often comes before resolution and renewed life. Maybe this year we can even more greatly appreciate the isolation and loneliness Jesus experienced. Walk the way of the cross with Jesus as you read the Passion Story. Draw strength from his courage. Give thanks for his selfless love.

You are invited to mark this holy day this evening at 7 p.m. when the DE-MD Synod will post a Good Friday worship service. You can access the worship bulletin and service at https://demdsynod.org  (click on “Digital Worship” and it will take you to the Good Friday  materials). You can also watch on the DelawareMaryland Facebook page or Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rxac8losM9c)

EASTER FLOWERS were delivered yesterday. I actually had a good time being out. It was pure joy to see faces, even if it was usually through front storm or screen doors. Proper social distancing was observed. But, gee, it was hard resisting the urge to hug!
There is still one pink and one white hyacinth that someone ordered but there was no name on the envelope. If that was your order, please contact me or Mary so we can get it to you.

EASTER SUNDAY PRELUDE We will be taping this Easter song fest this Saturday to be premiered on Sunday at *9:30 am. It will last about 25 minutes so you can then tune into the DE-MD Synod Easter Service. Again, you can access the worship bulletin and service at https://demdsynod.org  (click on “Digital Worship” and it will take you to the Easter Sunday  materials). You can also watch on the DelawareMaryland Facebook page or Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9ecG3T7rfE )
We will send out the Easter Sunday Prelude bulletin that you can download and print. Look for it today or on Saturday.
*Though showing for the first time at 9:30 am on Sunday, you can also watch it any time after that. The same is true with the DE-MD Synod worship services, too.

EASTER CHILDREN’S MESSAGE I hope to video tape a children Easter message and have Mary post it on our website and Facebook page for Sunday. Since we were trying to keep the Easter Sunday Prelude to 25 minutes or less, it didn’t seem to fit there. So I’m trying yet another new venture in technology. I haven’t forgotten you kids (or teens!) pray for you and your parents each day.

EASTER BREAK Today Bishop Gohl reminded pastor to take some time “off” after Easter to rest and be refreshed. I think I will heed his suggestion and step away from my daily messages for the  Monday and Tuesday after Easter. I will be back on Wednesday, April 15th. Even on these days “off,” do not hesitate to call me in the case of an emergency. (301-745-4216)

In the meantime, if you have any news, good stories, Godsightings, prayers, or song suggestions, we could included in a future Haven Message, send them to me (l.alessandri1035@gmail.com) or the church office (havenoffice@havenlc.org).  Also, if you would like to prepare “A Pause with God’s Word,” let me know. We have some good and thoughtful writers out there.

IS HE WORTHY I conclude today’s message with a song. It is one family’s Easter gift to us all. The song uses images from the book of Revelation to ask, “Is He Worthy.” I’m not going to say any more. Listen and let it fill you up. (I thank Marge Cunningham for sharing this post.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieNQ121tDsw

Blessings this Good Friday…. Easter IS coming.

A PAUSE WITH GOD’S WORD

Read: John 18:1–19:42
On Good Friday, the story of Jesus’ passion—from his arrest to his burial—is read in its entirety from the Gospel of John.
Find someplace comfortable and quiet. Read the Passion of Jesus in John’s gospel in your Bible, alone or with another. Read it slowly, pausing after each scene, to wander in the events and wonder what it was like to be there. Keep your eyes on Jesus who endures all he does for the love of us. Speak aloud or silently what you want to say to Jesus as you walk with him this Good Friday.

Prayer: Almighty God, your Son Jesus Christ was lifted high upon the cross so that he might draw the whole world to himself. To those who look upon the cross, grant your wisdom, healing, and eternal life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
