October 24, Sermon & Announcements

October 24, 2021 Sermon

Announcements ~ October 24, 2021

A: Let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!
C: Let us come into God’s presence with thanksgiving.       (Psalm 95: 1b-2a)

*God’s blessing to all and a special welcome to our guests. What a delight it is to be together in God’s presence to worship.

*The Adult Sunday School series entitled, “Lutheranism 101” continues and today we will look at how Lutheran’s approach the sacraments and worship. New to the Lutheran church or a veteran, come along and bring your questions. The class will meet in the Adult Sunday School Room. Veteran Haven members — be sure to help those new at Haven to find their way. There are also signs to help, too.

*Please forgive any errors in this week’s bulletin. It just has been a crazy week with our office computers and we did not have as much time to proof.  So be aware that we have reached 62.3 percent, not 61.8% of our Faith Building Together Goal and this Thursday’s Women’s Bible Study will be held in _____________________ rather than the Gathering Room. Again, we apologize for the errors.

*Next Sunday is Reformation Sunday. Wear red if you can. You can even get your picture taken with Rev. Dr. Martin Luther.

*On November 7th we will celebrate All Saints Day. If you have a family member or friend who died between November 1, 2020 and November 1, 2021, please print their name on your attendance form. We will include the names of these loved ones in our All Saints worship.

*The Education Team decided not to sponsor Trunk or Treat this year due to COVID. However, if it is not raining, Pastor Alessandri will be out on her driveway with a fire pit, candy and friends next Sunday, 6 – 8 pm if you’d like to join her. No guarantee any kids will come by, but we can have some good conversation.

This week’s concerns and joys

*Haven member, JoAnn Shankle is back at Julia Manor after a bout with COVID pneumonia.  Please keep JoAnn and her family in prayer.

*Best wishes to Mark Lochbaum and Beth Johns who have birthdays this week. Congratulations to Bruce and Judy Larson who celebrate a wedding anniversaries on Saturday.

A:        God IS here with us. Let us prepare ourselves for worship as we listen to the prelude.

November 5, 2021 Message from Pastor Alessandri

Haven Lutheran Church
November 5, 2021

BE SURE TO TURN YOUR CLOCKS BACK SATURDAY NIGHT!

You do NOT want to miss….

All Saints Sunday, when we remember all our brothers and sisters in Christ who have joined the Church Triumphant and who are joined with us throughout the world. 9:30 am

GOD SQUAD EXPLORERS Adventures in Thankfulness, 10:45 am – 12 noon at the

Explorers’ camp in the Sunday School area. Faith-filled fun, music, games, crafts, baking and prayer. All kids up through 5th grade are welcome. (Older kids can come can help!)

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL  “What about Luther’s 95 Theses?
When Martin Luther posted his list of concerns about church practices and teachings, he was hoping for discussion and reform. Pastor Kaplan will lead the class in looking over some of the highlights of Luther’s challenges. After worship – 12 noon. (All those who are interested are invited to go to lunch after class.)

CONFIRMATION RESUMES at long last! Those who are in 7th – 12th grades are welcome. 12 noon to 1:3o pm in the parlor.

The Property Team has organized several Clean Up Events to maintain OUR property this year.
On Saturday, November 13 starting at 9:00 am will be interior cleaning, primarily what we didn’t get done on Sept. 11th plus some outside work.
Saturday, November 20 starting at 9:00 am will be an outside cleanup day.

WE NEED YOUR HELP both inside and out. To save money we have not been paying our custodian to do detail cleaning in these areas. That’s why we have these cleaning parties to do things that need to be done a few times a year. So, pick one or more dates and sign up on the sign-up sheet in the Vestibule. THANK YOU FOR HELPING CLEAN UP OUR HAVEN.

HAVEN’S REOPENING TEAM MET THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 4
We all want folks to feel safe about coming to at Haven. So the team wants to remind us of the precautions we have in place.

*The air in Haven’s sanctuary is circulated through our new ionizing system 24/7. Did you know that with the installation of the new air conditioner for the Sanctuary, we also added two new, state of the art, air purifiers? These units, which run 24 hours a day are mounted inside the new air ducts and produces airborne Hydrogen Peroxide which is then blown throughout the Sanctuary. Recreating nature’s process of purifying air, this airborne Hydrogen Peroxide kills up to 99% of bacteria, viruses (including COVID-19), and other harmful pathogens both in the air as well as on surfaces.

*Hand sanitizing stations and masks are available at both entrances.
*Hand sanitizer is available in every pew.
*There is an area of chairs for those who wish to practice social distancing in the back of the center portion of the church.
*Communion can gladly be brought to anyone who would prefer not to come into the center of the congregation.
*While vaccinated persons are not required to wear masks, we recommend their use when the COVID transmission rate in Washington County remains high.
*We ask people to “pass the peace” safely from their pews and to use hand sanitizer.
*As folks come forward to communion, we ask they allow several feet between themselves and a member of another household who is in line before them. Pass on the word that Haven is a good place to worship, with safeguards in place to combat COVID during these challenging times.

A PIECE OF THE PAST TO
SUPPORT HAVEN’S FUTURE

Thanks to Ken Tice and Ken Myers, the wood from the cross that once stood in front of the education wing entrance has been reused to make lovely centerpieces, that can be used as an Advent log or any time of the year. They each have holes for five candles and could be decorated for any occasion or season. (The one in the photo has been decorated for Advent.)

We only have 19 available. So the distribution can be as impartial and fair as possible, the Council agreed to allow the Education Ministry Team to sell raffle tickets for these lovely wooden pieces.
One ticket for  $2  and six tickets for $10
Please note — There can only be one winner per household, regardless of how many tickets were bought or picked.

ALL PROCEEDS will benefit our Faith Building Together debt reduction fund.

Tickets can be purchased before and after worship on November 7, 14 and 21. Those who are participating in worship at home, may call (301-733-5056) or email (havenoffice@havenlc.org ) the church office to request tickets.

Winning tickets will be drawn on the first Sunday of Advent, November 28.
Let’s have some fun and build some excitement!

PASTOR ALESSANDRI WILL BE OUT OF THE OFFICE November 8-16. It is her annual trip for rest before busy the end-of-year holiday season. This year, Pastor Alessandri will vacation at the Massachusetts seashore with her seminary classmate, Ann. If you would wish a pastor’s care in her absence, call Pastor Lee Brumback, pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Funkstown. His phone number is 1-540-335-1710.  Please keep Pastor Alessandri in prayer, that her travels be safe and she return refreshed and renewed for our shared ministry.

COME TO HAVEN’s GATHERING ROOOM AT 9 AM
THIS SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17

Yes, 9 am and you will be treated to great seasonal music by talented musicians of the SUNDAY SCHOOL ORCHESTRA

The Sunday School Orchestra had it’s beginning as the Trinity Lutheran Sunday School Orchestra back in the early 1900’s.  It played every Sunday, September through June at the beginning of the Sunday School Hour, as all the adult classes assembled for a brief worship service before breaking into their individual classes.  Dr. Peter Buys, long time conductor of the Hagerstown Municipal Band, was one of the Orchestra’s first conductors.

Over the course of many years, schedules changed, and the ensemble became the Sunday School Orchestra or SSO. Today, the SSO is made up of talented local musicians with various backgrounds, who enjoy performing music as part of a Music Ministry, reaching the Hagerstown Community.  It now plays once a month at 3 local churches.  THIS YEAR, HAVEN LUTHERAN IS ONE OF THE THREE LUCKY CHURCHES THAT WILL BE BLESSED EACH MONTH (excluding December) BY SSO MUSIC!

So set your sight on getting to the Gathering Room at Haven at 9 am THIS Sunday for inspiring music.

ANOTHER MUSICAL HIGHTLIGHT THIS SUNDAY — THE HANDBELL CHOIR RETURNS TO HAVEN!

After a long hiatus due to COVID, Haven Bell Choir is back! THIS SUNDAY, October 17, the Bell Choir will provide us with music that enriches our worship. They will return to play each third Sunday of the month.

Welcome back, ringers. We missed you!

CHANGE OF OFFICE HOURS For our ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT

Mary Grabill, Haven’s Administrative Assistant, will be in the church office:

Mondays 9 am – 1 pm, Thursdays 12 pm – 4 pm, Friday 9 am – 1 pm

Though working at home on the other days of the week, Mary does check Haven’s emails and phone for messages daily.

Hagerstown Interfaith Coalition
Interfaith Prayers for Today

October 12, 2021

Unitarian Universalist Christian

May we each remember the different ways in which we pray as individuals. Whatever works for each of us, may we share in the joy of knowing we are together in the regard of the holy. Amen

Trinitarian Christian: a reminder to pray by looking at your hand.

The thumb is nearest to you: pray for those who are closest to you.

The pointing finger reminds us to pray for the support and wisdom of those who teach and instruct.

The middle finger is the tallest: pray for our leaders in government, business and industry

The fourth finger is our ring finger (it is our weakest one): pray for those in pain. those who are weak, those who are in trouble.  Pray day and night.

The fifth finger is the littlest: place yourself in relation to God and others.  Your pinkie should remind you to pray for all peoples, including yourself.

Holy Spirit of Life:

May our hands recall some of the ways we pray and what we pray for.

Today, let prayers arise for support and wisdom of choice, for recognition of the diverse communities of earth’s beings, for all who are in pain and sorrow, and for the self we inhabit on this earth: for our own blessed and challenged lives.

May we be open to You, the spirit of life which is in all peoples, and offer the holy bounty which is both blessing and possibility. May we help and not judge each other. Amen
