February 4, 2018 Sermon – The day Jesus smiled

February 4, 2018

A: Arise, shine; for your light has come, C: And the glory of the LORD has risen upon us.
God’s light be with you this Epiphany season. A special welcome to guests visiting with us today. We prayed you would come and hope you will let us greet you further after worship.

*It’s Souper Bowl Sunday. No, not the football game, but our Soup Pot collection of noisy and not so noisy offerings to battle hunger. When you leave worship, we hope you will put a generous offering in the Patriots, Eagles or I Don’t Care pots which will be held by our lovely, irresistible children in the narthex. No matter who wins the other Super Bowl, help the kids who need our Micah’s food backpacks to win with you hunger donation.

*Today in the adult Sunday School class, we will begin a two part series entitled New and Renewing Disciples at Haven. We will discuss our beliefs, our church and what it means to be a member. New and veteran members are invited. Questions and curiosities are welcomed.

*The Lenten Season begins February 14th. During most of the Wednesdays of Lent we offer a simple soup and sandwich supper before our 7 p.m. worship service. If you could provide a pot of soup or plate of sandwiches for one of those suppers, please mark that on your attendance sheet.

*Mark Tuesday, February 20th on your calendar. The Lutheran and Catholic communities of Hagerstown will hold a joint worship service at St. Ann’s Catholic Church at 7 p.m. to celebrate last year’s anniversary of the Reformation and our unity around the gospel. There will be a joint choir and our Delaware-Maryland Synod Bishop, William Gohl and the Baltimore Archdiocese Associate Bishop Denis Madden will offer reflections during this Lenten service. Please make plans to come worship our Lord and to proclaim our unity in Christ.

*Our Annual Meeting and Meal is also coming up the last Sunday of this month, February 25th. We will have it after worship so no one will need to come back in the evening. If you will be attending, please sign up on the attendance form. We need to get a good count so the Parish Life team can order enough for our main entree. Look for a bulletin board soon with the items to bring to the feast.

*Tomorrow we will have our automatic giving system up and going. If you are one who wants to continue or begin having your offering delivered to the church directly from your bank, please submit your form today. Forms are available on the secretary’s desk in the church office. If you have any questions or want to know more, call the church office and speak to Mary Grabill, the church secretary.

This week’s concerns and joys:
*We have had some folks in and out of the hospital recently. Sari Kilheffer had a fall and is home waiting to get stitches removed her head on Tuesday. Bob Hart is doing well after an appendectomy. Sue Resh has had her own adventure. Please keep them all in prayer.

*Welcome home to our teens and advisers who attended YOUTHQUAKE in Harrisburg PA last weekend. There are surely plenty of pictures and stories to be shared. Thank you for your donations which made it possible for them to attend.

*Best wishes to Carolyn Brogunier, Laura Manspeaker and Aaron Richards who celebrate birthdays this week.
