A Pause in God’s Word in Our Hope and Expectation
“From ages past no one has heard,
no ear has perceived,
no eye has seen any God besides you,
who works for those who wait for him.    Isaiah 64: 4

Prayer:  Lord Jesus, with outstretched arms you boldly come. In the silent unexpected places, you come to us as well. We are grateful. Amen.

People Look East (ELW #248)

Pastor Kaplan had an awakening Godsighting on his walk the First Sunday of Advent.

This past Sunday,

November 29,

In this season of despair,

I saw a butterfly.

Way too late, I thought.

With frost and rain and

Who knows – butterfly COVID?

It long since

Should have perished.

O creature of little wings,

I asked,

Don’t you realize

The harsh reality

Of this year?

When winter chills us

Before the first snowflake has fallen,

Reminding us

Three months before Lent,

You are dust and to dust

You shall return.

This past Sunday,

First in Advent,

In this season of new hope,

I saw a butterfly.

Way too early, I thought,

With just the whisper

Of a promise,

And yellow wings,

Like a flickering candle flame in the midst

Of pandemic darkness,

How can you survive?

O creature of little faith,

Was its silent reply,

Don’t you realize

The true reality

That lies below the surface

Of every year?

When winter chills you,

Before the first snowflake has fallen,

I’m here to remind you,

A month before Christmas and four before Easter,

The whispered promise becomes

A symphony of praise,

And the flickering candle flame –

No darkness, including yours,

Can overcome.

This past Sunday,

The beginning of a new Church Year,

I saw a butterfly.

But more than a butterfly,

A God sighting.

Pure gift from

The Lord of all seasons,

Who comes to bring healing and life,

To make all things new,

With an eternal springtime

We can’t even begin to imagine.

Here are words for the coming week. Can you share a picture, photograph,  story, sentence, song a prayer or memory that one of the words brings to your mind?
