October 14, 2018 Sermon – Stand Up Straight

Announcements – October 14, 2018
A: Seek God’s kingdom first C: for God knows all that we need
*Rejoice in God’s presence as we gather to worship today. A special welcome to all guests visiting with us. Your presence is a blessing.

*There’s good news and there’s bad news about the church secretarial position. The bad news is there is no farewell party for Mary today. The good news is that Mary will be staying as Haven’s secretary and administrative assistant. If you did not receive notice via e-mail this week, the full explanation is posted on the mobile message board. Envelopes of donations for Mary’s farewell gift will be returned. We are happy to have Mary back and as busy as ever.

*Tomorrow is the deadline for November newsletter articles. Please e-mail any submissions by then.

*Today we will continue collecting donations for the ELCA Disaster Response Fund to benefit those suffering from Hurricanes Florence and Michael and the earthquake and tsunami in Indonesia. You can make a donation through Haven. Checks should be made out to Haven Lutheran Church. Designate on the memo line if you wish it to be directed to the US hurricane relief, the Indonesia response or split between both.. Any loose cash will be divided between the work in the U.S. and Indonesia. Pray for the many people who are struggling to turn their world right side up after such devastation. 100% of your money will be used for a direct response to help those effected.

*This Friday, Oct 19th, at 6:oo pm Amanda McCafferty will be ordained into the ministry of Word and Sacrament at St. Marks’ here in Hagerstown. Amanda was Haven’s seminary students 2014 to 2015. Rarely do we get to witness the ordination of one of out students but you can this Friday. Please attend if you are able and help Amanda to celebrate this very significant occasion.

*It’s time to begin our collection of food for our Christmas food baskets. Pick a tag or two from the giving tree in the narthex, buy the items and bring them back to Haven. We’ll keep adding tags until our collection of foods is complete. Why are we collecting for Christmas food baskets in October? This way late November and December will be freed for another Christmas project. Thank you for you help. God’s Work. Our Hands.

* Please come be a part of Haven’s Trunk or Treat on October 28th, 6 to 7 p.m. Enjoy making children smile and talking with our neighbors. This is one easy way Haven can extend the church beyond these walls. One hour, just one hour! Can we get 18 cars this year? Sign up on the attendance form or at Sign-up Central. You WILL have fun!

*November 4th is All Saints Day. Please read the article on page 16 of your bulletin. Let us know of any loved one who has died since last All Saints Day on your attendance form. Gather pictures of your deceased loved ones to bring to church by October 28th for display during our All Saints celebration. Let’s surround ourselves in the memory and love of those departed saints who contributed so much to our lives.

*As noted on the bulletin insert, there will be a special congregational meeting immediately after worship on October 28th to a consider a motion from the Property Team. Please the insert and make every effort to be here on October 28th. It’s also Reformation Sunday. Wear RED if you can.

*Pastor Alessandri will be on vacation beginning on Wednesday. Pastor Lee Brumback of St. Paul’s in Funkstown will provide pastoral care in her absence. PLEASE keep you bulletin so you have Pastor Brumback’s number if you have an emergency and want a pastor present.

This week’s concerns and joys:
*Best wishes to Kim Pile, Darylene Blickenstaff, and Carole Young who celebrate birthdays this week. Congratulations to Scott and Cindy Rhodes who have a wedding anniversary this week.
